The Empire Records soundtrack was curated by music supervisor Mitchell Leib and released through A&M Records. Built around the alternative rock landscape of the mid 1990s, it combines established acts with newer and unsigned artists, including Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Cracker, the Cranberries, Evan Dando, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Coyote Shivers.
The soundtrack is closely associated with Gin Blossoms' "Til I Hear It from You," which reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Other notable tracks include Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You" and Evan Dando's cover of Big Star's "The Ballad of El Goodo," featuring Liv Tyler on background vocals. The album reached number 63 on the Billboard 200 and became a significant part of the film's later cult reputation.
