Steven Wilson’s eighth studio album, The Overview (stylized TH5 OV5RV95W), marks a return to progressive rock after his recent electronic explorations. Released on March 14, 2025, via Fiction Records, the album consists of just two sprawling 20-minute tracks and explores the Overview Effect—a cognitive shift experienced by astronauts upon viewing Earth from space. Wilson cites Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, and Vangelis as key inspirations, framing their influence within a modern context.
Premiered at the BFI IMAX on February 25 alongside a film by Miles Skarin, The Overview is also available in a deluxe edition, The Alterview, which expands on the concept with an additional hour of music. Wilson will support the album with his first solo headlining tour in over seven years, beginning May 1.
Critics have embraced the album’s ambition. Mojo's Tom Doyle awarded it a perfect score, praising Wilson for "boldly venturing where his contemporaries fear to go" and cementing his status as prog’s leading auteur. The Irish Times' Ed Power likened it to "one of the better Christopher Nolan films translated to music"—vaulted, self-serious, but undeniably impressive in scope. Meanwhile, The Guardian's Alexis Petridis hailed its audacious genre-blending, calling it "unexpected but triumphant."
