Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd, released on September 12 1975 in the United Kingdom through Harvest Records and on September 13 1975 in the United States through Columbia Records. Developed from material the band introduced while touring Europe, it was recorded across multiple sessions in 1975 at EMI Studios in London.
The album’s lyrics focus on absence, alienation, and criticism of the music industry. Its central work is the multi part suite “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” written as a tribute to co founder Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968. Roy Harper provides lead vocals on “Have a Cigar,” and Venetta Fields contributes backing vocals on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” The album also features extensive use of studio effects and synthesizers, continuing techniques used on The Dark Side of the Moon.
Wish You Were Here reached number one in both the United Kingdom and the United States, received gold certifications in its release year, and has sold widely worldwide. Critical reception was mixed on release but later reassessment placed it among the band’s most recognized works, including a ranking on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2023.
