Calvin’s 1971 debut for Black Jazz Records marked the emergence of a new jazz guitar virtuoso. Renowned for his collaborations with organists Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, and Jack McDuff, Calvin partnered with pianist Larry Nash on this album (Nash had previously performed with Bill Withers, Etta James, and other esteemed musicians). Calvin’s subsequent career in the Bay Area jazz scene commenced with the release of “Criss Cross,” “Gee-Gee,” “B.K.,” the title track, and the subsequent collection of early-1970s classics.
