Venus and Mars, the fourth studio album by the British-American rock band Wings, arrived in May 1975 as the highly anticipated follow-up to Band on the Run. Building on the success of its predecessor, the album solidified Wings' commercial dominance and set the stage for a year-long world tour. It also marked a significant shift in Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles career, as his first album to be released globally under Capitol Records rather than Apple.
Following the stripped-down, trio-driven recording of Band on the Run, McCartney expanded Wings' lineup in 1974, bringing in guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton alongside returning members Linda McCartney and Denny Laine. Sessions for Venus and Mars spanned London, New Orleans, and Los Angeles between late 1974 and early 1975. However, internal tensions led to Britton’s departure after just six months, prompting the band to recruit American drummer Joe English to complete the album.
Led by the hit single Listen to What the Man Said, Venus and Mars topped the charts in the US, UK, and several other countries. While critical reception was largely positive, the album’s eclectic mix of rock, balladry, and theatrical flourishes sparked divided opinions among reviewers.
