Big Band Bossa Nova captures saxophonist Stan Getz at a pivotal moment in his career, recorded in August 1962 at CBS 30th Street Studio in New York City. Following the success of Jazz Samba, his collaboration with guitarist Charlie Byrd, this album pairs Getz with arranger and conductor Gary McFarland under the production of Creed Taylor for Verve Records. Together, they expand the bossa nova sound into a more ambitious orchestral setting without losing its elegance or intimacy.

McFarland composed four original pieces and arranged four Brazilian works, crafting an ensemble sound distinct from the typical big band lineup. Rather than relying on heavy brass, he opted for a more refined palette of woodwinds, French horn, and a carefully balanced rhythm section enhanced by Latin percussion. The result is a constantly shifting texture that frames Getz’s lyrical tenor tone, with tasteful contributions from Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Doc Severinsen, and Bob Brookmeyer.

Upon release, Big Band Bossa Nova reached No. 13 on the Billboard Top LP chart and remained there for 23 weeks, solidifying the staying power of the bossa nova movement. DownBeat critic Don DeMichael awarded the album five stars, praising Getz’s melodic mastery and McFarland’s restraint and taste as an arranger. More than six decades later, the album remains a model of sophistication, bridging the cool precision of American jazz with the sensual sway of Brazilian rhythm.
