Based on the Best Seller is the fourteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Sloan, released on September 26, 2025, through Yep Roc and the group’s own Murderecords imprint. Recorded at The Bunker and Taurus Studio in Toronto, with additional sessions in Chris Murphy’s garage, the album reflects the band’s enduring DIY ethos and commitment to self-production.
As with much of Sloan’s later work, Based on the Best Seller combines sharp pop craftsmanship with nods to the band’s deep back catalogue. Two of its tracks—“Baxter” and “Open Your Umbrellas”—originated as unfinished demos from the One Chord to Another (1996) and Navy Blues (1998) sessions, now reimagined with the band’s modern sensibilities. The result bridges eras, blending the immediacy of Sloan’s 1990s power-pop prime with the maturity of their more recent albums.
The album also includes “No Damn Fears,” a song that reaches back even further into Sloan’s pre-history. Its title references drummer Andrew Scott’s early band of the same name, which featured Jennifer Pierce and Dave Marsh of Jellyfishbabies, nodding to the Halifax music scene that first shaped the group. Based on the Best Seller feels like both a reflection and a renewal—an album that celebrates Sloan’s past while proving they still write hooks as smart and enduring as ever.
