Vs. is the second studio album by Pearl Jam, released in October 1993. Coming off an exhaustive tour behind their debut Ten, the band entered the studio in early 1993 under intense pressure to follow a runaway success.
The result was a noticeably rawer and more aggressive record. Vs. marked Pearl Jam’s first collaboration with producer Brendan O’Brien and their first album with drummer Dave Abbruzzese, capturing a more confrontational sound and mindset.
The band deliberately scaled back promotion, including refusing to make music videos for the singles. Despite this, Vs. sold nearly one million copies in its first five days, setting a SoundScan era record for first week sales. It spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, received widespread critical acclaim, and has since been certified seven times platinum in the United States.
