Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory is the fifth studio album and first concept album by Dream Theater, released on October 26, 1999, via Elektra Records. Recorded at BearTracks Studios in Suffern, New York, it marked the debut of keyboardist Jordan Rudess and served as a sequel to “Metropolis—Part I: ‘The Miracle and the Sleeper’” from Images and Words (1992).
Drawing from the narrative depth of classic concept albums such as Tommy, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and Operation: Mindcrime, Scenes from a Memory embraced a traditional progressive rock sound while solidifying Dream Theater’s status as a defining force in progressive metal. The album peaked at No. 73 on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim, earning recognition as one of the genre’s landmark releases.
Guitar World ranked it among the "100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time," while Classic Rock placed it 15th on its list of the greatest concept albums. Rolling Stone readers voted it the best progressive rock album in a 2012 poll, and it later secured a spot in the magazine’s “50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time.” Loudwire and The Prog Report also highlighted its lasting influence, with PopMatters’ Jordan Blum declaring it "the greatest progressive metal work of all time."
