Dio's debut album, Holy Diver, was released on May 25, 1983, through Warner Bros. Records. Following Ronnie James Dio's departure from Black Sabbath, he formed Dio with drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain, and guitarist Vivian Campbell. Produced by Dio himself, the album showcases his powerful vocals and fantasy-inspired lyrics across a collection of heavy metal anthems.
The album features some of Dio's most enduring tracks, including the title song "Holy Diver," "Rainbow in the Dark," and "Don't Talk to Strangers." "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow in the Dark" both received significant radio play and became staples of MTV's early heavy metal programming. The album's cover art, painted by Randy Berrett and Cassell Webb, depicts a demon drowning a priest and has become one of heavy metal's most iconic images.
Holy Diver peaked at number 56 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Critics praised Dio's vocal performance and the album's melodic yet heavy approach, which distinguished it from both his work with Rainbow and Black Sabbath. The album established Dio as a successful solo artist and remains a landmark recording in traditional heavy metal.
