Yellow & Green is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Baroness, released on July 17, 2012, through Relapse Records. A double album that marked the band’s boldest stylistic shift, it found Baroness blending their sludge-metal roots with melodic, progressive, and atmospheric elements. Written during a yearlong touring break and recorded in late 2011 with producer John Congleton, it is the only Baroness album recorded as a trio, with frontman John Baizley handling bass duties following the departure of Summer Welch. It would also be the final full-length to feature drummer Allen Blickle, who left the band after their 2012 bus accident.
The album was met with critical acclaim, earning an 82/100 score on Metacritic and appearing on year-end lists from Spin and Entertainment Weekly, both of which named it the best metal album of 2012. Critics praised its ambitious scope and emotional depth, with standout tracks including “Take My Bones Away,” “March to the Sea,” and “Eula.” The album debuted at number 30 on the Billboard 200, the highest chart debut in Relapse Records’ history, and its singles reached the Billboard Active and Mainstream Rock charts.
Yellow & Green remains a landmark release for Baroness, showcasing a band willing to evolve beyond genre constraints while delivering one of the most acclaimed metal records of the decade.
