Pale Communion is the eleventh studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth, released in 2014 through Roadrunner Records. Produced by Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by Steven Wilson, it was the band's first album to feature keyboardist Joakim Svalberg and continued the stylistic shift introduced on Heritage.
The album places greater emphasis on melody, clean vocals, and progressive rock arrangements, with no death metal vocals. Its sound draws from 1970s progressive rock, hard rock, and jazz fusion, with prominent keyboards, layered harmonies, dynamic shifts, and extended instrumental passages. Songs such as "Eternal Rains Will Come," "Cusp of Eternity," and "Moon Above, Sun Below" reflect this more melodic and compositionally detailed approach.
Pale Communion reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 and further established the progressive direction that would define Opeth's subsequent work.
