Wayne Shorter's eleventh album, Schizophrenia, was recorded on March 10, 1967, and released through Blue Note in May 1969. The album features five Shorter compositions and an arrangement of James Spaulding's "Kryptonite," with Shorter joined by alto saxophonist/flautist Spaulding, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers.

AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine described the music as existing "at the border between post-bop and free jazz," noting that it "crackles with the excitement of Shorter and his colleagues trying to balance the two extremes."
