Tonic is a live album by Medeski Martin & Wood, recorded over a series of performances at New York City's Tonic club in March 1999. Returning to the acoustic piano, bass, and drums format of their earliest recordings, the album captures the trio in an intimate setting that reflects their roots in jazz improvisation and small club performances.
Recorded before an audience of roughly 150 people, the performances place listeners in the centre of the room, with the musicians surrounded by the crowd. The stripped back instrumentation allows the group's interplay and improvisational approach to take centre stage, moving between jazz, avant garde, groove, and free form exploration.
