City Lights is an album by Lee Morgan, recorded on August 25, 1957 and released the following year on Blue Note Records. Morgan was just nineteen years old at the time of the session, already emerging as one of the most promising young trumpeters in modern jazz.
The recording features a sextet that includes trombonist Curtis Fuller and saxophonist George Coleman, supported by a rhythm section of pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. The album combines Morgan originals with standards, with highlights including “City Lights,” “You’re Mine You,” and “Just by Myself.”
Released during Morgan’s early years as a bandleader, City Lights captures the trumpeter developing the confident style that would soon place him among the leading figures of the hard bop era. Critics at the time noted his technical control and compositional promise, qualities that would become central to his later work with Blue Note.
