By 1974, Donald Byrd had fully embraced a new direction. Stepping Into Tomorrow marked a high point in his collaborations with producer Larry Mizell, delivering a sleek, groove-heavy sound that blended jazz with funk, soul, and R&B. The title track and “Think Twice” became enduring favorites, later sampled by artists including A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, and Madlib.
Backed by a stellar lineup—Gary Bartz on sax, Chuck Rainey on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Fonce Mizell on vocals and keys—the album is rich with layered arrangements and a spacious, rhythmic pulse. Byrd’s trumpet remains central, cutting through each track with clarity and warmth.
A cornerstone of 70s jazz-funk and a lasting influence on hip-hop, Stepping Into Tomorrow remains one of Byrd’s most celebrated works from his electric period on Blue Note.
