Recorded on March 9, 1958 and released later that year on Blue Note, Somethin’ Else stands as one of Cannonball Adderley’s finest albums—and the only one he recorded for the label. It also features a rare sideman appearance by Miles Davis, who at the time was leading his First Great Quintet and had just finished recording Milestones.
Davis’s presence looms large, selecting much of the material, composing the title track, and playing the opening solos on several tunes. Highlights include the moody take on Autumn Leaves, inspired by pianist Ahmad Jamal, and the bluesy One for Daddy-O, written by Adderley’s brother Nat.
Praised in its day and still considered essential, Somethin’ Else captures two major figures at pivotal points in their careers, backed by a rhythm section that includes Art Blakey and Hank Jones. It remains a cornerstone of late 1950s hard bop—lyrical, relaxed and masterfully played.
