NEW LP
New sealed copy. 2023 reissue.
Released in October 1991, Death Certificate is Ice Cube’s politically charged and controversial second studio album. Produced by Cube alongside Sir Jinx and DJ Pooh, the album is split into two thematic halves: The Death Side, depicting social decay, and The Life Side, offering a vision of empowerment and self-awareness. Its raw lyricism addresses racism, poverty, gang violence, and media hypocrisy with unflinching intensity.
Tracks like “Steady Mobbin’,” “True to the Game,” and the incendiary “No Vaseline” (a direct attack on Cube’s former group, N.W.A) cemented the album’s reputation as both a critical flashpoint and a cultural landmark. “Black Korea” and “Horny Lil' Devil” drew widespread controversy and were even censored from the UK release. Despite this, the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, sold over a million copies in advance orders, and was certified platinum within two months.
Widely acclaimed in retrospect, Death Certificate has appeared on numerous best-of lists and remains one of the most provocative and influential hip hop records of the 1990s.
