NEW DOUBLE LP
New sealed copy. 2023 reissue.
Released in June 1995, Exit Planet Dust marked the Chemical Brothers’ debut under their new name, following legal pressure from the original Dust Brothers. The album established their place in the UK’s burgeoning big beat scene, blending hip hop breakbeats, psychedelic textures, and distorted samples into a sound that was as aggressive as it was danceable. Tracks like “Leave Home” and “Chemical Beats” became early club staples, while “Life Is Sweet” showed their ability to craft crossover singles with melodic hooks.
Originally recorded between August and November 1994, the album’s first half flows as a continuous mix, reflecting their roots as resident DJs at the Heavenly Sunday Social. Live energy, layered samples, and booming low end define the record’s sonic signature. “Song to the Siren,” included as a live cut, served as their earliest underground hit, and its inclusion here solidified the duo’s DIY beginnings with a growing commercial vision.
Critically acclaimed on release and still widely celebrated, Exit Planet Dust helped push electronic music into new territory during the mid-1990s. With its combination of raw textures, genre-hopping instincts, and undeniable energy, it became a foundational album for big beat and influenced peers like Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk. Over the years, it has been recognized in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, named one of the best dance records by Muzik, and praised in retrospectives for its psychedelic edge and club-ready intensity.
