Phoebe Bridgers' debut studio album, Stranger in the Alps, was released on September 22, 2017, through Dead Oceans. Produced by Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, the album was recorded in between tours over 2016 at Berg's studio in Brentwood, Los Angeles. The title references the edited-for-TV version of The Big Lebowski, which changed a profane line to "Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?" Bridgers chose the phrase because she found it "kind of poetic on accident."
Described as "a collection of sad folk songs," the album incorporates fiddle and electro-noise with lyrics referencing David Bowie and Jeffrey Dahmer. The single "Motion Sickness" was among the most-searched indie rock lyrics according to a study examining Google searches from January 2019 through July 2023. "Would You Rather" features Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes.
Stranger in the Alps received widespread acclaim from critics, earning a Metacritic score of 82/100. The A.V. Club gave it a perfect score, calling it "one of the best albums of the year," while Paste described it as "one of 2017's best debuts" and "one of that year's (and this decade's) best albums by anyone at any stage of their career." Pitchfork rated it 7.0/10, praising Bridgers' conversational voice and songwriting about intimacy.
