Red Headed Stranger is Willie Nelson’s landmark concept album and a defining work in outlaw country. Released in 1975 after Nelson signed with Columbia Records (gaining full creative control), the album was recorded on a modest budget with minimal instrumentation—primarily guitar, piano, and drums—giving it a stark, intimate feel that stood in contrast to the heavily produced country records of the time.
Inspired by an old cowboy ballad Nelson remembered from his days as a radio DJ, the album tells the story of a fugitive preacher on the run after a crime of passion. The narrative unfolds through brief original compositions and covers of traditional songs, including Fred Rose’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” which became Nelson’s first number-one hit.
Despite skepticism from Columbia executives, the album became a commercial and critical triumph. It was certified multi-platinum, earned Nelson a wider mainstream audience, and is now considered one of the most important albums in country music history. It has since been added to the National Recording Registry and ranked highly on numerous “greatest albums” lists.
