Warren Zevon's second studio album was recorded in 1975 and released on May 18, 1976, through Asylum Records. The cover photo by Jimmy Wachtel depicts Zevon standing in the parking lot outside the Hollywood Palladium on the night of the 18th Annual Grammy Awards. A remastered version with bonus tracks was released by Rhino Records in 2008.
The album received positive reviews from critics. Robert Christgau praised Zevon's ability to resist pigeonholes like "country-rock" while avoiding both the banal and the mystagogical, highlighting memorable quatrains such as "And if California slides into the ocean/Like the mystics and statistics say it will/I predict this motel will be standing/Until I pay my bill." Pitchfork awarded the album a perfect 10/10 score, while PopMatters and Uncut both gave it 9/10.
