Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall is a landmark live album recorded on November 29, 1957, and released nearly five decades later in 2005 by Blue Note Records. Captured during the "Thanksgiving Jazz" benefit concert at Carnegie Hall—an event that also featured Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, and others—the performance documents two sets by the Thelonious Monk Quartet, with John Coltrane as a key collaborator.

The tapes, recorded by Voice of America, remained stored in the Library of Congress for decades and were rediscovered and digitized in 2005 by audio engineer Larry Appelbaum. Restored by producer Michael Cuscuna and Thelonious Monk’s son, T.S. Monk, the release was celebrated as a major archival find. It significantly expanded the limited recorded legacy of Monk and Coltrane’s brief but important musical partnership in 1957.

Prior to this discovery, only a handful of studio sessions captured their collaboration—most notably on Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, Monk’s Music, and Thelonious Himself. A separate live session, Live at the Five Spot: Discovery!, also features the same quartet. However, the Carnegie Hall recording stands out for its exceptional audio quality, historical significance, and the vivid interplay between two of jazz’s most influential figures at a pivotal moment in both of their careers.
