Steve Lacy's second studio album, Gemini Rights, was released on July 15, 2022, through RCA Records. The album showcases Lacy's genre-blending approach, incorporating elements of funk, R&B, psychedelic soul, and indie rock. Lacy wrote, produced, and arranged the entire project himself, continuing his unconventional method of recording much of the material on his iPhone using the GarageBand app before transferring it to professional studio software.
The album produced the breakout hit "Bad Habit," which became Lacy's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2022. Other singles including "Mercury" and "Sunshine" also gained traction, helping the album debut at number seven on the Billboard 200. "Bad Habit" experienced viral success on TikTok, propelling both the song and album to widespread commercial appeal well after its initial release.
Gemini Rights received critical acclaim for Lacy's songwriting and production, with reviewers praising his ability to craft intimate, groove-heavy tracks that balance vulnerability with sonic experimentation. The album earned nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album. Its success transformed Lacy from a respected producer and guitarist into a mainstream solo artist with a distinct creative voice.
