Toronto-based jazz fusion outfit Orbital Ensemble arrives fully formed on their debut full-length, Orbital — a rich, cinematic blend of psychedelia, jazz, and Brazilian rhythm, guided by composer and multi-instrumentalist Felipe Sena. Inspired equally by road trips through Brazil and the vinyl shelves of his youth, Sena draws on the lush soundscapes of Clube da Esquina, the groove-forward fusion of Azymuth, and the rhythmic urgency of Meta Metá. The result is a record that feels both deeply personal and expansively global.
Written and produced by Sena, Orbital features Lazar Miric on flute and saxophones, with acclaimed São Paulo percussionist M. Takara lending his touch to two tracks. The album is the starting point for the larger eight-piece Orbital Ensemble — a Toronto-based live group that brings these textured compositions to life with drums, Brazilian percussion, keys, vibraphone, and more.
Fans of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Khruangbin, and Badbadnotgood will find plenty to admire in the album’s warm, groove-laced arrangements. But Orbital is its own universe — a confident, exploratory debut that connects jazz tradition with modern psychedelic experimentation, all through a uniquely Brazilian-Canadian lens.
