Bare Trees is the sixth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in March 1972. Recorded during a period of creative strength but growing internal tension, it marked the final appearance of guitarist and songwriter Danny Kirwan, whose departure would follow soon after its release. Peaking at number 70 on the Billboard 200, the album was later certified platinum as the band’s mid-70s success brought new attention to their earlier work.
The record features five Kirwan compositions, showcasing his lyrical sensitivity and melodic sense on songs like “Child of Mine,” “Bare Trees,” and the instrumental “Sunny Side of Heaven.” Christine McVie contributes standout moments with “Homeward Bound” and the soulful “Spare Me a Little of Your Love,” while Bob Welch’s “Sentimental Lady” would later become a solo hit. The album closes with “Thoughts on a Grey Day,” a spoken-word poem by a neighbor near the band’s communal home, adding a touch of English eccentricity to the set’s wistful tone.
In hindsight, Bare Trees represents one of Fleetwood Mac’s strongest pre-Buckingham/Nicks efforts—a balance of tight musicianship, introspective songwriting, and understated warmth. Critics have since praised it as the first consistently strong record of the band’s early years, one that hints at the melodic sensibilities that would soon carry them to global fame.
