Recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, New York, it was produced and mixed by multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, marking his first full production credit on a Mountain Goats album.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe record is notable for being the band’s first full-band release in more than two decades without longtime bassist Peter Hughes, who departed in 2024. John Darnielle conceived the title after a phrase that appeared in a dream and described the album as a dedication to Hughes’ years of collaboration.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePresented as a narrative song cycle, Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan follows the survivors of a shipwreck, focusing on a captain and his final companion as they face isolation, visions, and physical collapse. The album’s sessions were completed over nine days in January 2025 with engineering by Matthew Barnhart and assistance from Ben Loughran.
