This release presents selections from Robbie Robertson’s early film scoring work for The Last Waltz, Carny, and Raging Bull. It includes a previously unissued track from Carny and offers a focused view of the period when Robertson began composing for motion pictures after his work with The Band. His collaborations with director Martin Scorsese started with The Last Waltz in 1978 and continued with Raging Bull in 1980. Carny, released the same year, was produced and performed by Robertson in addition to featuring his music.
Developed with the cooperation of the Robertson estate and issued alongside his memoir titled Insomnia, the collection highlights the foundation of his long creative partnership with Scorsese. Jon Burlingame provides liner notes that describe the context of these films and Robertson’s early approach to scoring.
